From Xbox Live Gold to Game Pass Core: The Evolution of Free Games

For years, Xbox Live Gold subscribers received a monthly selection of free games – a perk that was once highly sought after but has since become the subject of ridicule due to the relatively low profile of the titles. Launched in July 2013 for the Xbox 360, the Games with Gold promotion expanded to cover the Xbox One and later the Xbox Series X and S.

Xbox Live itself has a rich history, dating back to its launch on November 15, 2002, on the original Xbox. The online multiplayer aspect of Halo 2 played a significant role in popularizing the platform. Today, Core offers access to online console multiplayer and provides subscribers with a collection of over 25 games to play on Xbox Series X and S and Xbox One for $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year.

As of September 14, Xbox Live Gold will be replaced by Game Pass Core, which Microsoft describes as an evolution of the former service.
